FIOU

International Festival of Orchestras of Galicia September 3, 4 and 5
FIOU

What is FIOU?

FIOU is a mixed musical festival that brings together the best dance orchestras from the five continents.

In FIOU, the sensual and the vibrant coexist, the melodic and the rhythmic, the classic and the contemporary, through eleven stellar groups from various geographies and cultures: from Latin America to Galicia, from Europe to the United States. FIOU is a new festival concept that combines the traditional format of the popular “verbena” with the current large-scale musical events.

The hallmark of FIOU is dance, its emotion and boldness, where the audience and the artists share the spotlight. FIOU is a unique event that aspires to become the great European showcase of the world’s orchestras.

Why?

In the 1930s of the last century, the first dance orchestras emerged in Galicia.

Initially in the bourgeois halls of towns and cities and later in the “verbenas” of rural Galicia, the orchestras had a great impact by performing musical repertoires that reflected the popular taste of each era, and that are authentic testimonies of our history: from the native “muiñeiras” to the Latin American rhythms of emigration, including the “pasodobles” and songs spread by the radio.

Since then, Galician orchestras have grown in quantity and quality, succeeding on international tours and forming a leading musical sector and a reference in Spain. With the creation of FIOU, we want to dignify a unique phenomenon of Galician culture, pay tribute to our popular “verbenas” and project Galicia to the place it deserves as the European epicenter of orchestra music.

For whom?

The word FIOU denotes whistling and joy.

This new festival is aimed at all the people who have fallen in love under the chords of the orchestras on a summer night, all the people who enjoy dancing at a high-voltage party, all the people who feel curiosity and attraction for the intense music of other latitudes of the planet, all the people who have ever contributed their effort to a festival committee to organize their town’s “verbena”, all the people linked as professionals or lovers of the orchestra world, and of course all those who appreciate the natural, gastronomic, and monumental authenticity of a privileged corner of inland Galicia.

"Excellent organisation at a very good price. We did the French Way with half board, and everything was perfect."
