The Xacobeo 2010 program reached 13 countries
The Xacobeo 2010 program of the Xunta de Galicia reached thirteen countries throughout last year through exhibitions, concerts and talks held in different parts of the world, according to information provided by the Department of Culture and Tourism.
In this way, the Xunta brought to Germany, China, Japan, Slovakia, the United States, Romania, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Portugal, Brazil, Belgium and Argentina various events framed within the celebration of the Holy Year, thus fulfilling the objective of offering a decentralized program and exporting the values and image of Galicia and the Camino de Santiago.
For example, on the occasion of Xacobeo 2010 and the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, the Spanish Embassy in Japan launched the travelling exhibition “Galicia and the Camino de Santiago,” which visited several cities in the country until concluding its particular pilgrimage in Wakayama, coinciding with the end of the Holy Year.
In Italy and France, the exhibition “Compostela and Europe. The History of Diego Xelmírez” was on display, while “Glimpses on the Camino de Santiago” was the exhibition that covered the longest route, taking it through Brazil, Slovakia and several cities in Argentina.
The exhibition “Francisco Leiro. Celebrating the Codex Calixtinus” reached Brussels, exploring one of the masterpieces of Galician medieval culture through the works that the Galician painter and sculptor created for the new edition of this text, which represents the first-ever translation of the Latin manuscript into Galician.
In October, the German city of Lübeck hosted the exhibition “Camino de Santiago. A Vision from the East by Tomohiro Muda.”
The photographic exhibition “Rome-Santiago, Santiago-Rome” can still be visited in Puerto city until January 28, and until January 15 in Romania the audiovisual exhibition “Memory of Pilgrimage. Camino de Santiago, First European Cultural Itinerary,” which will later travel to Bulgaria.
The sounds of bagpiper Carlos Núñez travelled through France in March as part of a series of eleven concerts sponsored by Xacobeo 2010, while in China a concert by Budiño was held on May 21 within the framework of the Shanghai Expo.
In May, New York was the city chosen to present the Jubilee Year and its image in the United States, introduced by bagpiper Cristina Pato as cultural ambassador, with a concert in the prestigious auditorium of “The New York Times.”
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York held a series of conferences in October and November in which renowned American intellectuals and researchers discussed various topics about Galicia, the Camino and the cathedral of Santiago.
