Lighthouse Route

Lighthouse Route

A Camiño dos Faros that traverses many different landscapes, always facing the sea and the west.

Lighthouses, beaches, dunes, rivers, cliffs, forests, estuaries rich with birdlife, granite shores, ancient settlements, dolmens, fishing villages, viewpoints to the crashing sea in all its forms, sunsets… a hiking route like no other that will take the walker into a world of unique sensations only found on this Costa da Morte.

"A walk along the Spanish Costa da Morte. This is recommendation number 25 from The Telegraph to its readers looking for a “great adventure” as their next travel destination. The British newspaper encourages its audience to specifically follow the Camiño dos Faros along the “dramatic” Galician coast. It describes the area as “dangerous for sailors” but “simply stunning for hikers.” Among its attractions are historic lighthouses, shipwreck remains, cliffs, and coves.

Visitors are also advised to enjoy the “fresh seafood” on their route to Finisterre, the place long considered to be “the end of the world.” This Galician destination is the only one in Spanish territory included in the list, sharing the spotlight with great adventures such as conquering Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya, playing with primates in Rwanda, crossing the Gobi Desert with a nomadic tribe, or preparing for mountaineering in the Himalayas. Other exotic suggestions include following the rhino trail in Namibia, prowling around polar bears on a Canadian island, or learning to hunt with Australian Indigenous peoples.

The Camiño dos Faros consists of eight stages ranging between 20 and 32 kilometers, creating a hiking route that connects Malpica and Fisterra while always walking along the coastline. In total, it spans 200 kilometers where the coast takes center stage, covering the main points of interest on the Costa da Morte. The lighthouses are the main attractions. Seven are visited along this long route: those of Fisterra, Touriñán, Muxía, Vilán, Laxe, Roncudo, and the photogenic Punta Nariga. There are also spectacular viewpoints like those of Monte do Facho, Punta Buitra, or the Virxe do Monte chapel at Farelo. While the natural treasures are the major draw of this route (passing by remarkable beaches like O Rostro, Mar de Fóra, or Arnela), archaeological remains can also be enjoyed, such as the Castromiñán settlement, the Dombate dolmen, or Castelo do Soberano.
