Many walkers, before embarking on this goal they have set themselves, such as the Way of St James, through any of the different routes available, ask themselves: How should I do it? On my own (planning my route, accommodations, dates, etc.) or organised, prearranged (through an active tourism agency or leisure activity organiser)?

That is the question, and below we detail the various advantages and disadvantages of doing it one way or the other:

Organised, Prearranged, or Guided Way of St James

Advantages

- The Organised Way of St James is currently one of the options many people are choosing to undertake, either because without this method they would never have this great experience, or because they see it as an additional way to maximise their time and complete the route.

- Most Active Tourism and Leisure Agencies offering these services include Travel and Accident Insurance. In the event of any issue, you have the security of being covered for incidents such as accidents, theft, etc.

- Some agencies allow you to choose the dates, although others have fixed departure and arrival schedules.

- When it comes to overnight stays, you often get a private room with an en-suite bathroom, ensuring well-deserved rest.

- Many services also include a companion, guide, support vehicle, and direct contact with the agency to address your urgent needs, provide advice on the route, tips, places to visit, etc. This will save a lot of time, something that is sometimes scarce for many of us.

- It is also a unique and unforgettable experience, very enriching, which motivates many to undertake it year after year along its various sections. Every year, more lovers of the Way of St James proudly carry the star of having walked and felt the magic of the Way.

Disadvantages

- Although you can already customise your Camino, some Tourism Agencies offering these activities have fixed dates, accommodations, and departure points, which may not align with your preferences.

Doing the Way of St James Independently

Advantages

- Achieving a personal goal in life contributes to enhancing your resilience, enthusiasm, and self-esteem. Seeing a goal accomplished enriches you inwardly.

- You choose the date you will start.

- You can also select where to stay overnight.

- For those who enjoy organising their trips and routes autonomously, this is the ideal choice.

Disadvantages

- Like everything in life, undertaking a major route on foot or by another means independently involves certain risks.

- Without travel or accident insurance, you face the risk of dealing with any mishap personally.

- During the route, you may have personal needs, make phone calls, check the route conditions, weather, etc., and you will need to manage these on your own.

- You will need to book your own accommodations at hostels, guesthouses, hotels, or rural tourism houses, with the drawback that there may not always be availability or the accommodation may not meet your needs.

- Rest. There are many accommodations where you will have to share a room with other travellers, with all the inconveniences this entails for your well-earned rest after a long day (unwanted noise, etc.).

- Personal Hygiene. Similarly, many easily accessible accommodations are overcrowded, meaning you will need to share bathrooms and showers. This does not mean that such accommodations are inadequate, only that you will have to share them with others.

- You will need to carry all your luggage and personal belongings, such as your backpack. One of the significant challenges of doing the Way of St James independently is carrying your own gear, either on your back or in panniers. It is a tough physical test that requires preparation to endure distances of 20 to 100 km, whether on foot or by bike.

- In short, it is a great adventure that generally turns out well, but it involves some minor risks and circumstances that require more personal time and effort.
