The Camino de Santiago with a Dog: Some Suggestions
Walking the Camino de Santiago accompanied by your dog is becoming increasingly common, as they are our best friends. It is a unique and rewarding experience for both, but we must consider several aspects before embarking on this adventure.
Any of the Camino routes can be completed with your dog, but based on our expertise at Camino de Santiago Reservas, we recommend the French Way, specifically the section from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela, as it is the best equipped, and we can ensure there are dog-friendly accommodations at every stage.
The first aspect to consider is both your physical preparation and that of your dog. Both of you should train for several months before starting the Camino. It is advisable to begin with walks of several kilometres, gradually increasing the distance daily until you are covering the equivalent of a Camino stage (20-25 km) during your daily walks.
You should ensure that your dog is sociable and accustomed to walking among people, as you will encounter many other pilgrims during the stages of the Camino.
It is crucial to keep your dog leashed throughout the Camino, especially when passing other pilgrims or in public gathering places, to avoid any issues or surprises and ensure a peaceful experience.
Once you are physically prepared, you should gather all the necessary items for your journey.
Important items for your dog’s luggage:
- Dog’s passport and documentation
- Portable water bowl
- Harness or collar and leash
- Dog raincoat
- Waste bags for your dog’s droppings
- Paw balm
Regarding food, if your dog has special dietary needs, it is advisable to bring their own food. Otherwise, you can find food in the towns along the Camino to avoid carrying too much.
If you use the services of a travel agency with extensive experience in the Camino with dogs, they can assist you with transporting food and essential items between stages for your dog’s care.
Applying paw balm is essential for three weeks before starting the Camino and during the journey to protect your dog’s paw pads.
Finally, since 2018, the Animal Protection Association of the Camino has been providing dogs with the Perregrina or Canine Compostela upon arrival in Santiago. This certificate recognizes that the animal has completed the Camino de Santiago alongside its owner, although it is not officially recognized nor does it bear the seal of the Catholic Church.
