Camino de Santiago Route: Stages from Santillana del Mar to Comillas

Santillana del Mar: The First Step on the Camino
The starting point of this stage is the pilgrim’s hostel in Santillana del Mar. From here, we head towards the main square of the town, passing by monuments such as the Towers of Merino and Don Borja, the Gil Blas Parador, and the Town Hall.
We begin on Los Hornos Street, between the Don Borja Tower and the Town Hall, leaving the heart of Santillana behind. At the first junction, we go straight ahead, and after a few meters, we take the path to the left that leads us through a campsite. After crossing the CA-351 regional road, we continue towards Arroyo, enjoying panoramic views of the sea and the Picos de Europa.

Arroyo: A Link with Tradition and Nature
In Arroyo, we leave the chapel on our left and continue along the main path. Upon reaching a fork, we take the left path, passing by a farmhouse. The route leads us to Oreña through cultivated meadows, and after crossing the bridge over the San Tito stream, we arrive at the village square, where we follow the street to the right. After about 100 meters, we find another fork and take the right branch towards the Church of San Pedro in Oreña.

Oreña: A Descent Towards the Next Destination
After the church, we continue straight along a path that takes us to a junction. We choose the left branch and soon reach Caborredondo, a small housing cluster. We proceed to the CA-352 road, where we turn right, passing by the chapel of San Bartolomé. After crossing the CA-131 road, we enter a path that leads us to Cigüenza, where we visit the Church of San Martín.

Cigüenza: From the Countryside to the Coast
In Cigüenza, we continue towards Novales, where Mediterranean crops like lemon trees and chestnut trees stand out due to the climatic influence. We cross the bridge to the chapel of San Pantaleón in the Herrería neighborhood, and then climb a rise to the local road CA-353. We continue on this road until we reach Cobreces.

Cobreces: Monuments and Rest at the Hostel
In Cobreces, we pass by the Church of San Pedro Advíncula and descend towards the Viaceli hostel at the Cistercian Abbey. From there, we take an agricultural path with several forks, always keeping to the right, until we reach the CA-356. After crossing the Conchuga stream, we arrive at Venta del Tramalón, next to its Santiago chapel.

Venta del Tramalón: Following the Route
From the chapel, we take a dirt road that leads us to a junction. By turning left, we reach the CA-358 road, where we follow the bike lane until we reach the CA-359 road, which takes us to the square in the La Iglesia neighborhood.

La Iglesia: The Path to the Monastery
From La Iglesia, we follow the CA-360 road to Pando, where we are welcomed by the chapel of San Roque. After crossing the Carmelites Monastery, we descend along a path towards Concha.

Concha: Nature and Heritage
In Concha, we walk along a dirt path with panoramic views of the sea and the remnants of the regional lighthouse. We cross the Portillo Bridge, entering the municipality of Comillas, known for its late 19th-century architecture and its connection to the Marquis of Comillas.

Comillas: A Place of History and Architecture
Comillas, of medieval origin, gained prominence thanks to Don Antonio López, the Marquis of Comillas. Here, we find architectural gems such as Gaudí’s Palacio del Capricho, the Pontifical University, and the Palacio de Sobrellano. Comillas is a unique place, with buildings in Neo-Gothic, Modernist, and Classical styles, reflecting the region’s splendor at the end of the 19th century.
