Camino de Santiago from Sarria

Camino de Santiago from Sarria, the most popular choice among pilgrims, the last 100 kilometers
Camino de Santiago from Sarria

Most of us have either thought about or heard someone say they want to do the Camino de Santiago.

The first name that will come to mind, or that will be recommended if you ask, is the French Way, or in other words, the last 100 km from Sarria.

This route is the one most frequently chosen by pilgrims for several reasons, one of which is its strategic location.

It is situated 114 km from the Cathedral of Santiago, meeting the minimum 100 km requirement needed to obtain the Compostela at the Pilgrim’s Office in Santiago.

Sarria, perched on a hill, offers visitors a wealth of monuments, including:

  • CHURCH OF SANTA MARIÑA:

A 19th-century Gothic-style parish church built on the foundations of a 12th-century Romanesque structure that had fallen into ruins.

  • MONASTERY OF LA MAGDALENA:

The most iconic monument in Sarria, built in the 12th century, almost concurrently with the town itself.

In addition to Sarria, pilgrims will encounter truly extraordinary places, such as the Portomarín reservoir, beneath whose waters the old town lies. In Palas de Rei, one can admire an authentic heritage gem, the Castle of Pambre. In Melide, a delicacy of Galician cuisine awaits: its famous octopus. In Arzúa, visitors can taste its renowned cheese, and in the final stage, just 5 km from Santiago, lies the Monte de Gozo, an ideal spot to pause, where pilgrims can catch their first glimpse of the Cathedral of Santiago.

Whether starting this new adventure alone or not, you will always be surrounded by fellow pilgrims. Along the way, you will meet people from different cultures, experience unique and unforgettable moments, and rediscover simple yet profound sensations, such as helping one another and solidarity, values that are increasingly being forgotten today.

Beyond its historical, gastronomic, and cultural attractions, another highlight of this route is its nature. Pilgrims will discover unique places full of history, walking through farmland, forests, villages, and small hamlets while enjoying the stunning green landscapes of Galicia.

As for services for pilgrims, the towns along the way are well-equipped with accommodations, restaurants, bars, and spots where you can rest or purchase local products.

This section of the route does not include high mountain stretches and can be done at any time of the year.
