How Long Does It Take to Complete the Camino de Santiago?

Many people who wish to become pilgrims ask the following question: how long does it take to complete the Camino de Santiago? And there is no single or correct answer, as the Camino can take an undetermined amount of time for each person.

The Camino de Santiago is an unforgettable experience, so it is important to make the most of it, even though sometimes we must juggle as our return to work or university is often too soon and with limited time. This is why we do it quickly, without being able to focus on all the details hidden in each of its stages.

The duration of the Camino de Santiago can be approached in various ways. We can choose a Camino to complete over several years, not necessarily in the same year, but over time we can progress through its stages until we reach Santiago de Compostela, where everyone finishes their journey. Another way is, if it is your first time, to choose an easier Camino, with a duration of about a week, so that it is manageable without overexertion and as comfortable as possible. Lastly, if time and effort are not an issue for your Camino, we can embark on a journey that spans several days until we complete the route we have set for ourselves.

Another aspect to consider when deciding how long it takes to do the Camino de Santiago is whether we want to do it on foot or by bike, as one biking stage corresponds to 2 or 3 walking stages, meaning that in the same number of days, the distance covered will be much greater.

Once we know the days we have available, as well as our physical condition and how we want to complete it, we can choose one of the Caminos that cross the Peninsula, such as the French Way, Portuguese Way, Primitive Way, Sanabrés Way, Vía de la Plata, English Way, etc.

Next, we’ll provide a brief summary of the various Caminos and the possibilities they offer, breaking down their stages to give an idea of how long it takes to complete the Camino de Santiago:

Complete French Way, Saint Jean Pied de Port – Santiago de Compostela on foot, 33-35 days.
