Muxía and the Camino de Santiago
Muxía and the Camino de Santiago
All pilgrimage routes lead to Santiago, except for the Fisterra-Muxía Way. It is the only route that, instead of heading towards the city, starts from it and continues towards the Atlantic and the stunning views of the Costa da Morte.
It is worth mentioning that the Costa da Morte is magical and unique, offering extraordinary scenic beauty. It is highly recommended to wander along its cliffs and breathe its fresh air while enjoying a sunset.
The cultural history of Muxía is linked to the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Boat and the surrounding stones: it is a parish church of Christian devotion.
According to legend, the Virgin came to this place in a stone boat to encourage the Apostle during his preaching, and the scattered stones are the remains of the vessel. Beneath one of these massive stones, the image of the Virgin appeared, which was then moved to the Church of Muxía. Enigmatically, the image disappeared, only to be found again in the same place where it was originally discovered. This mystery led to the construction of the sanctuary.
