Sarria - Santiago itinerary: what to see, discover and taste on the French Way

Discover the most popular route of the Camino de Santiago: from Sarria to Santiago in 7 unforgettable days

The Sarria – Santiago de Compostela itinerary is undoubtedly the most chosen section of the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. With just over 100 km, it’s perfect for obtaining the Compostela and enjoying the essence of the Camino: nature, history, gastronomy and spirituality. From caminodesantiagoreservas.com we explain everything you can see, discover and taste on this route, stage by stage.

1. Sarria – Portomarín (21 km)

Begin your adventure in Sarria, a village with medieval charm and plenty of services for pilgrims. Walk through oak forests, Romanesque bridges and traditional hamlets. In Portomarín, the fortress-church of San Nicolás will surprise you, rebuilt stone by stone after the construction of the Belesar reservoir.

  • Don’t miss: A walk by the reservoir and the monumental staircase.
2. Portomarín – Palas de Rei (24 km)

A gentle stage with views of meadows, rural villages and Roman remains. Upon arriving in Palas de Rei, visit Pambre Castle, one of the few that survived the Irmandiña uprising.

  • Typical dish: Lacón con grelos and Cea bread.
3. Palas de Rei – Arzúa (29 km)

A long stage but full of attractions. Enjoy the pilgrim atmosphere in Melide, where one of the Camino’s essentials awaits: pulpo á feira (Galician-style octopus). Don’t leave without trying it in a traditional “pulpería”.

  • Experience: Octopus tasting with Ribeiro wine in Melide.
4. Arzúa – O Pedrouzo (17 km)

A peaceful stage through eucalyptus forests and small hamlets. In Arzúa, land of cheeses with designation of origin, you can visit a local cheesemaker or enjoy a tasting session.

  • Flavours: Arzúa-Ulloa cheese and artisanal honey.
5. O Pedrouzo – Santiago de Compostela (20 km)

The final stage is full of emotion. Monte do Gozo offers the first views of the Cathedral towers. Upon arriving in Santiago, the botafumeiro, the Apostle’s crypt and the atmosphere in Obradoiro Square mark the end of an unforgettable journey.

  • Recommended: Attending the pilgrim mass and stamping your Compostela.
